I visited the Bessey Clamp manufacturing plant.

In January 2026, our sales representative traveled to Germany and visited the BESSEY factory, which manufactures clamps.
This article will share our tour of the factory and reveal the secrets behind Bessey clamps' high precision and strength.

BESSEY is a long-established clamp manufacturer headquartered near Stuttgart in southwestern Germany. Since its founding in 1889, it has continued to provide high-quality and innovative tools, and celebrated its 135th anniversary in 2024.

The manufacturing of clamps is divided into a steel materials division and a production and management division, and we handle everything in-house, from raw materials to assembly, packaging, and shipping.

This factory handles not only steel materials for clamps, but also contract work for the automotive and medical industries.

The process of making the clamp rails

① Prepare a coiled steel material (approximately 700 kg).

②The steel material is straightened using vertical and horizontal rollers.

③ The product is formed by cold drawing.

Cold drawing is a processing method that changes the shape of metal by stretching it at room temperature without heating it.
This method is used because heat can cause variations in the properties and shape of steel materials.
During molding, a mold matching the rail size is used to ensure uniform molding.

④ Straighten it again with a roller and cutting it to the specified length.

Here, we cutting and shape standard-length rails delivered from the steel materials division, and also assemble and package the clamps.

① After cutting the standard-length rails to the appropriate length, they are bent and pressed.

After cutting, the rails are heated and bent into the shape of the clamp.
　 The bending is performed using an automated machine, and at the same time, the shape of the tip is pressed and formed.

② Manufacture the spindle.

The spindle is made by forging rather than machining, resulting in high strength.

③ Assemble the clamp.

After assembling the handle, spindle, and cap, attach them to the arm. Then, attach them to the rail.
This entire process is carried out by automated machines.
　 Products that do not meet the required right-angle accuracy are checked by human eyes.
The finished products are stored on shelves in the warehouse, sorted by model.

④ Pack the finished products.

Small quantities of goods are packed by hand and loaded onto trucks.
For products destined for overseas export, the goods are packed into large boxes and then secured with PP bands using an automated machine.

The packaged goods are stored in warehouses until shipment and then transported to destinations all over the world, including Germany.

We have been selling Bessey clamps for many years, but this was our first visit to Bessey. We were able to see for ourselves how many more people are involved in the manufacturing of clamps than we had imagined, and how they produce such high-quality products.

By automating processes where efficiency can be improved and relying on the skills of craftsmen for crucial aspects, high-quality products are created through a fusion of tradition and new technologies.
I was deeply impressed by the company's long history and its strong emphasis on tradition.
